Engine surges - Barry - 19-06-2023

Yesterday my T3 has started to play up

It has started to hunt / surge just off idle.
Idles fine.
But at anything above say 1500rpm it will rev for 10 secs then drop down for a couple is secs and return.
Then repeats this
Drives OK but you feel at a light cruise.

Don’t believe it is an air leak as the revs drop - not increase

Any ideas?

Not a fuel issue, as you have had a few. Filter etc.

RE: Engine surges - Barry - 19-06-2023

Dont think so.
They originated from the tank.
No noise from the filter.
Thinking more throttle body or sensors?

RE: Engine surges - Barry - 19-06-2023

While I'm looking - thought I would change rotor and cap.
Both were tired.

Couldnt find one here at the usual haunts and even Brickwerks were out of stock.

Tooley's to the rescue.
2 rotors and 2 caps on the way.

Dodgy fill ?
ie maybe water in the tank…..?
If suspected, try the metho. fix.

Nils to the rescue

So the Nils Throttle body has gone in and all seems well.
The surging had stopped before this happened, so not really sure what the issue was.
Wait to hear back from Nils on the condition of my old one

RE: Engine surges - Barry - 12-08-2023

So…… to close this out.

I have been quite time poor lately, and issues with both kombis and we are leaving today for a two week holiday overseas.

Spoke with Nils and the old one wasn’t that bad.
But the micro switch was all gummed up.
Apparently it has never had a cover?
It’s underneath so you wouldn’t know looking at it.
New one does  Big Grin
So with all that dirt driving, no wonder I had issues

The new throttle body seems to go well……….except once or twice when I kick down (I have an auto) it stuck at wide open.
I couldn’t work out WTF was going on and my mechanic that did the work had taken off for a couple of month holiday.
Being an auto it isn’t just a matter of undoing the accelerator cable and checking for movement in throttle body.
Autos have this weird set up of a spring and an E circlip so I have found out.
While scouring the internet trying to find out the best way to get it off, I came across 1 comment that said “don’t make the mistake I made where you end up with the throttle body getting stuck in the wide open position”
It is so easy to bend the spring that goes through the lever arm a “poofteenth” that it causes it to become stuck.

So….. there ya go.
Who would’ve known.
